We were out of school for MLK day and then we had a teacher workday on Tuesday. But for some reason, just being in school for 3 days this week has been rough!

Our county has taken on a new pacing guide this year. Place value was moved to the second semester of school (we began Wednesday). I have always taught place value at the very beginning of the school year so this has felt a little foreign for me.

We have a great handle on ways to name a number. Monday begins our comparing numbers. I quickly made a differentiated guided math lesson for my students to use at the beginning of the week. I like hand on activities for them and I think this will be great practice for them.

I also like how I can stick this in a math center in the weeks following for them to review! You can pick up a copy of it in my TPT store now for free!
Happy Wednesday!
We have made it half way through the week! It seems like it is a long haul as we inch slowly to Spring Break! We haven't had many days off lately and the weather has been spectacular. So we are ready!!! We are wrapping up the third quarter and making our way to the end of the year. Does it seem like you have saved some pretty challenging things for the end of the year like me? Some of the last things I teach are some of the hardest things I teach. Up first for my friends is subtraction. We sure do take it to the next level when we get to subtraction. Regrouping from 10's to 1's, 100's to 10's, across zeros! Whew, my brain hurts!! We love to use the subtraction poem, More On Top...No Need to Stop, More on the Floor...go next door and get 10 more, Numbers the Same?...Zero's the game. It is such a fun and catchy way to teach it. Now that we have been working on it for about 2 weeks, I thought it would be fun to do a foldable where we are sorting the different kinds of subtraction problems while practicing them at the same time! Check it out here! As you know, I teach in a Spanish/English immersion program. So lucky for you, this resource is in English AND Spanish!
This is always such a fun thing to teach but it also feels like I am teaching it FOREVER! While kids LOVE reading informational texts, sometimes they are not very motivated to work WITH informational texts. As a culminating activity to our text features, I gave this assessment. Students are to look for the text features in a book that I assigned to them and fill it out accordingly. The thing I like about this assessment, is that it is generic and can be used with any informational book. I also really like the fact that I can differentiate the assessment based on the needs of my students by assigning different books for them at their Just Right level!
We have officially hit the half way mark. Can you believe it? This year has been flying by and I am loving it more than ever. My two classes this year are some of my favorite kids to ever teach. They are growing and changing everyday and I am so proud of how much they are learning!

I wanted to pop in and give a quick update about Bloomz in my classroom this year. Do you remember when I posted this about Bloomz before school started? Well, last week Bloomz sent this little graphic to me that really made me excited.

This sums up my classroom communication pretty well. You can see what I LOVE using. I love to post, I love pictures, I love setting up events, and conferences! This app is wonderful for so many things and I love that it is all in one location. As you can see, my love for this app has also given me some extra time in my classroom. Check out my total time saved!!! Here are some highlights of the things I have loved so far this year:

Conferences: When you have 2 classrooms and 36 families to schedule conferences for it can be pretty overwhelming. I was able to set up and schedule 56 total conferences with ease!

Sharing pictures: I have always been really great at taking pictures during the day. Unfortunately, I haven't been so great at uploading the pictures to where they need to be. Now with Bloomz, I have the app on my phone so I am able to immediately upload any pictures I take and I can add a brief description to my parents what the pictures are. Now there isn't a delay in getting information out! Here is a post I made today. I snapped 4 pictures while we were completing a measurement activity. As soon as I took the pictures, I immediately uploaded it.

Volunteers: There are two ways to use the volunteers. You can ask volunteers for help in your classroom or you can ask for items to be sent in. I haven't really used the volunteers for coming in to help yet. I am actually wanting to use this feature more soon! But I have used it to ask for items to be sent in. The first time was for my holiday party. On the same day that I posted the request for items for our holiday party, I had everything filled! It was so wonderful and so easy. The day of the holiday party was super easy for me because the items just kept coming in all week. My day was a breeze!! Then just this past Thursday, I went to get some sandwich bags out of the cabinet and I realized I only had gallon sized bags left and I really needed 3 boxes of sandwich bags. I quickly put the request up and by the next morning had them all in my hands. It is amazing!

Quiet Hours- Here is a new feature that I LOVE! We can now set quiet hours so that we won't receive notifications at all hours of the day and night. I have a few parents who work third shift and they will often send me messages at late hours of the night. This feature allows them to send me the note they need me to see when it is on their minds without it causing my notifications to go off at 3am! It is quite amazing!

As we take the downward slope into the end of the year there are still things I am excited about trying.

Portfolios- I am anxious to use this with my students and upload some work for them to share with their parents. I haven't found the time to try this yet but I am going to work on finding the time to use it with my students!

Behavior Management- Every school year for the 4th quarter, I try to implement a behavior management system. I find that as school winds down toward the end of the year, my kids' behavior struggles some. I always like to introduce something new for them to work with that is motivational. I am SO excited for this year because it is all within the same app that I have grown to love. My parents are loving the app too and I know when I add the behavior management component in, it will be seamless.

Overall, this app is still the best thing that I could bring into my classroom. I have introduced it to my colleagues and most classrooms have implemented in their rooms as well. Here is my favorite thing so far. My principal is totally on board as well. In staff meetings, when he gives us information that he would like for us to send to our parents, in the past he would ask us to put the information in our newsletters, websites, and email parents. Now when there is information he would like us to send to parents, he says, "please send out a Bloomz message or post letting your parents know..." How cool is that?

It isn't too late either! Try it today. I promise you won't regret it!

Happy Communicating!

I finally ventured back into my classroom today. I actually went in early in August to drop off a bunch of the stuff in my classroom. But today was the first time I actually worked on some things. When I went in early August I dropped my summer projects off and moved everything out of the giant pile in the middle of my room. I was afraid the sight of all that stuff stacked up in the middle of the room would keep me up at night.

So I quickly moved the big stuff to the right places and left.

One thing that took several hours today was my book basket labels. I am not completely done with those yet so they will be my next Back to School post.

I worked on organizing my supply tubs today. Since I have two separate classes that share the same space, I have had to get creative with my supplies. I used to keep all of the supplies that the students bring in and give them out as needed. But it was really hard for me to keep track of which class and which students were using the supplies. I decided to let the students keep their extra supplies in their cubbies. When they needed something, they went to their bucket and took it out. When that supply was out, I sent a note home for the parents to send in more. It really helped out a lot and took a lot of the stress of it away from me. The only issue I had last year was that the students couldn't keep track of which bucket was theirs. I used two different buckets in the cubby with two different lids, but both lids were white. This became confusing to the kids. So this year I decided to paint the lids to help them know which one is theirs.

I have never spray painted plastic before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I had read about spray paint chipping as soon as it dried so I made sure to get the paint especially for plastic.

I am really happy with how they turned out and I think they look great in my cubbies. There is no way the kids will get them confused this year!!!

Spray painting is kind of addicting! I went ahead and spray painted all of my clothes pins too. I really want to paint some more things now! What have you painted for your classrooms?

Happy Painting!
Last week, I woke up at 2:45am and had a thought about something I needed to do for school. I thought to myself that I needed to get a pad of paper to write my ideas down when they come to me in the middle of the night. But the more reasonable side of me won. "It's 2:45 in the morning, don't be ridiculous! Just write it down when you wake up!" Sadly, I woke up and didn't remember what it was! I STILL to this day, all these days later, have NO clue what it was that woke me up!. Oh well!

I am slowly but surely, getting geared up for this new school year. I brought home several different projects to do this summer and one by one I have been checking them off my list of things to do! I will be sharing them with you in the upcoming weeks as part of a Back to School series of posts I intend to do.

But first up is all about Parent Communication. I think every teacher has a love/hate relationship with parent communication. I think we would all agree that there should be a college course, when getting our degrees, devoted to parent communication, right!?!?

My approach to communicating with parents has evolved over the years, just as I suspect most of yours has as well! For me it has been a lot of "guess and check". Try this and see how it works. Use what does and get rid of what doesn't! A few years ago, I embarked on gaining my National Board Certification and communication with parents became one of my focuses as I reflected on my practices as a teacher. One thing that I have noticed regarding my communication with parents is how it has changed as I became a parent. I have often said that I became a better teacher when I became a parent. I also think I became a better communicator with parents when my children went to school.

I have tried a variety of things that were all working for me. I just felt like a huge amount of time was devoted to communicating with parents. I was maintaining a class webpage, facebook page, weekly newsletters, emails, remind app, and volunteer spot. I was doing a great job with communicating with my parents but I felt like that was ALL I did. On top of everything we have to do in addition to communicating home, it just got to be a little much. As you know, one of my teaching mantras is to work smarter not harder. So I needed something that would help me in this area.

Last summer, I came across a blog post talking about a new app that was changing communication. With a change in my teaching I thought I would give it a try. It is called Bloomz. I am here to tell you, it was AMAZING!! I teach in a 50/50 English/Spanish immersion program. So I have two classes of students that I share with a teaching partner from another country. I teach fully in English and he teaches the exact same thing I am teaching in Spanish and our classes flip between us each day. So I have a different class every day than the day before! It also means that I have 2 groups of parents to communicate with. Each class is different, they have different personalities and needs. I don't teach identical days with both classes so communicating with parents is a tricky thing. I loved lots of things about Bloomz! I loved it so much, I recorded a VLOG about my 3 favorite things that I loved the most. I hope you enjoy it. However, there are some disclaimers about my VLOG.
1) It is the first one I have ever done.
2) It is still technically summer so I do not wear makeup or do my hair in the summer.
3) I have been sick and couldn't talk for more than 15 seconds without hacking up a lung so I filmed it in snippets and then put them altogether.

I hope you consider trying Bloomz this year. Click here to check it our for yourself! It has really made communicating with parents so much easier, quicker, and more efficient than ever before! If you try it, leave me a message and let me know how you like it!
Where do I even begin? When we began Writers and Readers Workshop all those years ago, I don't think I realized the extent to which my teaching day would revolve around Anchor Charts. I have come to love and appreciate their use and existence in my everyday routines. I love how students can give input to create the charts and reference the charts when necessary. Over the years, I have had to come up with a procedure for how long to keep charts and when to take them down. I have also gone through those rough stages of charts becoming like white noise. The students no longer see or use them!

2 years ago, I was fortunate enough to participate in a Professional Development about the book Smarter Charts by Marjorie Martinelli and Kristine Mraz.
I loved the way this PD forced me to really think about what the purpose for my charts were. I was always so worried about my drawing and my handwriting. But I learned that the focus always needed to be about the students and their needs. They didn't need to be perfect, just thoughtful.

Fast forward to this summer. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a summer intensive workshop with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. It was amazing!! If you ever have the opportunity to attend one, I highly recommend it! The project works hand in hand with the Smarter Charts book and I learned about Chart Chums, the blog of the writers of the book. It is such an amazing resource. I also fell deeply in love with the Large Post it Notes that are encouraged to be used on anchor charts.

As I explained in my previous post, I am embarking on a new spanish/english immersion program. As you are well aware, it is vitally important to have students give input and help create anchor charts. As this year began, I realized I was running into a slight issue. I began one chart with my blue class and then began a second chart with my green class. I was going through chart paper like crazy! I discovered that I could use the Post it Notes to my benefit. I could create them ahead of time and put them up as the current class and I made the chart. Then at the end of the day, I could take them off and use them again tomorrow with the class that came the next day. After the chart was completed, I could hang the one chart on the wall that both classes created. I have saved a huge amount of chart paper!!

I take a picture of the anchor charts and put them in my students' Readers/Writers Notebooks. This way they can reference the chart if needed. It also allows for me to not worry about taking the charts down. If they need to reference a chart that has been taken down, they can look in their notebooks. I also use the picture that I take, in a plastic sleeve. Once the chart comes down, I can place the post it notes in the plastic sleeve and save for next year. I keep all of the plastic sleeves in a 3 ring binder.

I love how the charts help me to work smarter and not harder. It helps simplify the process of anchor charts and helps my classroom run so much smoother! Not to mention, the post it notes helps make the charts so cheerful and colorful. Here are a few of the charts my classes and I have made so far this year:
It's Sunday! Does your brain work extra hard on Sundays like mine? I try so hard to take care of school things on Friday afternoons and some Saturday mornings and spend the rest of my weekends relaxing. But something happens on Sundays. I begin thinking about the upcoming week and everything that I haven't gotten done!!!

I am embarking on a new adventure this year. I am teaching in a 50/50 Spanish/English immersion program. I am paired with a wonderful teacher from Chile and we have a class of 24 and a class of 23 students that we share. We teach identical days, me in English and her in Spanish, and our kids flip flop back and forth between the two of us. So each day I have a different class than the day before. When all is said and done, I will have taught each class for 90 days in English.

This week we were working on representing numbers in standard form, expanded form, base ten blocks, and number words. WOAH! I found myself at a loss when it came to the number word form. I am unsure if it is that my students are bilingual, or just a rough year, but I found myself needing number words for my wall that covered numbers to 999. By no means are these fancy, but they cover all numbers in standard form and number word form from:

1-10
11-19
20-90
Hundred

I printed them, mounted them on colorful card stock, laminated them, and hung them on my wall. I am hoping they will be a huge help and resource to my students as they learn how to spell these number words. Click on the picture below to pick up your own free copy!

Happy Sunday!
Hello everyone! Juli is in Hawaii!! While I am....in curriculum writing. Could our summers be more different???

Juli is enjoying a much deserved, kid free vacation with her hubby. I am sure she is getting some amazing pictures and will be hopefully posting them for us to enjoy when she returns.

Now onto the ever exciting world of curriculum writing. The first day I was treated to a thrilling introduction to UbD (Understanding by Design). Yesterday I was able to gain a deeper understanding of Performance Tasks. For the rest of the week I get to dive in to curriculum maps and design for K-2 ELA. I imagine Juli is doing her best to control the enormous amount of jealousy that must be bubbling up inside of her. She will unfortunately have to content herself with sand, palm trees, and tan lines. Please feel free to take a small moment of your time to extend your thoughts to Juli and her suffering.

But seriously, in all honestly, going through this has really deepened my understanding of not just my curriculum but the curriculum before and after second. If you have not done much with vertical alignment, take some time to see the curriculum beyond your world whenever you get the chance.

That said, given the chance - I would rather be in Hawaii!
Does Spring Break totally refresh and rejuvenate you like it does me?!? This has been such a wonderful week. I hate to see it going by so quickly! It has been filled with nothing but fun and relaxation! We had an egg drop at our church this week. We dropped 20,000 eggs out of a helicopter. My kids loved that!!!
We have had beautiful weather that has allowed for endless hours of playing outside, riding bikes, and enjoying sweet treats in shorts and T Shirts!

I have also enjoyed a little extra time to get some school work done. Heather and I are embarking on a very new and exciting adventure next year. I am sure you will be hearing lots about it in the upcoming months. But I needed some new baskets, so my kids and I had a fun excursion driving from store to store looking for these cute green baskets. After visiting 5 different stores, I think I finally have enough. You may remember my blue baskets from my post here. Next year I am going to have 2 classes. A blue class and a green class. So naturally, with adding another class full of kids, I need some baskets! :-)

But the one thing that Spring Break does for me is make me LONG for summer break. How about you!?! We officially have 47 school days remaining and 70 days left until Summer Break and I can't wait!!!

Especially with the extra long winter that we have had this year, it is a welcome sight in my eyes. Since summer in North Carolina can be a little rough, Spring is just the best time. Warm temperatures, abundant sunshine, Carolina Blue skies, and no HUMIDITY!!! Perfection, if you ask me.

One of the things that I love to do most with my class is garden. Typically, I begin planting with my kids in late January and early February. But considering this winter has been horrible and just last weekend it was 24 degrees, gardening has been delayed!

I think now that our freeze warnings are behind us, it's time to get our hands dirty!!! A local nursery donated brand new dirt for us and we shoveled it in this week.

I am excited to get my kids out there in those beds and begin planting. We will be partnering with our PTO this year as an economics lesson. My students will be growing, harvesting, and then on Fridays selling their plants at our school's Farmer's Market! All the money earned will be donated back to our PTO. I am so excited to get started!

First up this week is one of my favorite activities from a fellow NC blogger. Rachel Lamb, also known as The Tattooed Teacher, has made a really cute little gardening activity that I highly recommend. I always begin my gardening with this cute activity. Be sure to check it out!!
Do you remember when we did our post about graphing candy hearts here? Well, we decided to change it up a little bit this year. Instead of a bar graph, we will be completing a pictograph. I have updated the file to represent a pictograph instead. Just click on the picture below:

Maybe you want to do both with your kids? Click on the first link to access the bar graph.

Happy Graphing and have a Happy Valentine's Day!
Greetings world!
I have missed everyone so much. I actually have missed blogging...a lot! Things just get so busy don't they? I feel like Heather and I have struggled a little in the last couple of years with the stress and management of several unruly classes. But I come to you on our 103 day of school in complete second grade bliss. I am in love with my little bunch of babes and I wish time would slow down just a little!

The last few weeks we have been busy graphing. Graphing everything imaginable! Most specifically we have been working on Bar Graphs and Pictographs. I was getting a little tired of coming up with lots of survey questions to ask my class. Then I came across this amazing file from Kim Swoveland. Aren't they incredible? So I laminated them and put them up on my board. Each day I assign a different group to answer the survey question as they enter the room. By Friday, everyone has been able to answer and we are ready to use the data.

From our survey data we create a tally chart and then a pictograph and bar graph on Fridays. It is a quick and easy way for my class to practice this graphing skill each week! Check out the blank graph that I use each week. I just copy the pages front to back.

Last week we had a very short week as we missed school on Monday for parent/teacher conferences. Then we had a fun filled field trip to the zoo. So in all we were only in class for 3 days...the week of Halloween!! So I found myself asking, what can I do to keep these kiddos busy during a very different week. I went to my tried and true sources for some ideas.

I love using Sunny Day's Pumpkin Science investigation! You can find it here:
Pumpkin Science Investigation

I also love Abby's Pumpkin Activities from The Inspired Apple. You can get them here:
Inspired Apple's Pumpkin Stuff

The kids have such a great time with all of these activities. They kept us busy for our 3 days and the kids were engaged and excited!

The other day in my browsing of Facebook, I came across this video posted by Box Tops for easily counting 100 box tops.

I loved the video and immediately shared it with our wonderful PTO who spend so much time counting our box tops for our school. Then the video got me thinking. How could I use this for counting other things. So I made a file folder that looked like this for each of my pumpkin groups:

They were very easily able to line the pumpkin seeds up in the boxes to begin counting by 100's. I gave each group a large sandwich bag and told them to begin counting by 100's. When they could no longer fill the grid, I told them to raise their hands and I brought around small snack bags and had them continue to count by 10's. Then, when they couldn't complete a ten anymore, they set the leftover ones to the side. Then they were able to easily count by 100's, 10's, and 1's! It was also much more manageable for both the kids and me! I highly recommend it!

Now thanks to the election we are now in the throws of teaching government. So much fun!

Until next time!
It can be so boring can't it? This week we have moved into adjectives. In our experience, these are some of the hardest to teach. They definitely don't know them from first grade either, so we straight up get to teach adjectives. A few years ago, we came across the Suzie Adjective activity made by one of our favorites Hope King. Check it out here!!!

Suzie Adjective

We loved this activity so much that we enlisted the help our our K-2 Literacy Lead teacher to come and visit the class. Her name is Anna, so we renamed the activity Anna Adjective to fit her.

The kids LOVED her visit and we were so happy to have her. The activities that go along with the visit are wonderful as well and we highly recommend them. Thanks Hope!!
I'm Back!

I sure have missed all of you followers (if we still even have any). I actually have really missed blogging. It just has been a little low on my totem poll with all my things going on. I am setting some personal goals for myself this year and blogging is back on as one of them! I hope to be blogging regularly and sharing what we are doing in our class.

Like Heather said, last year was one of the roughest years I have had in a long time. But one of the best things about teaching is that we get a fresh start every year. There really aren't very many professions that have that luxury.

We have been in school a little over 2 weeks and things are going so wonderfully! I am absolutely in love with my class!

This week we are studying maps! One of the first things that I like to teach is Cardinal Directions. I use the Dr. Jean song about directions. Then we create a compass rose that they get to cut and paste and then color beautifully! For being such slackers last year, I am giving this away for free! Hope you enjoy it and can use it in your classroom!

See you soon!

We are suffering from PTTD. It was a ROUGH school year. We struggled, taught, and cried but we made it through. Before this school year, Juli and I were very proactive in our teaching. We surfed blogs, created products for TPT, and brainstormed new ideas constantly.

THEN...this year happened. The group came to us with a reputation for being a tough crew. We are experienced we thought. We have had rowdy classes before we thought. We've got this we thought.

THEN...the first day of school happened. Wow! Okay we thought. We have all sorts of tricks and techniques we thought. It will take a more creative approach we thought.

THEN...survival mode happened. Exhausted, deflated, and at a complete lost, we went into survival mode. Blog surfing ended. TPT shopping ceased. I lost ten pounds and started struggling with massive anxiety. At winter break, I cried and begged my husband not to make me go back - not that there was really any choice! All teaching desire had been drained from me. I would feel guilty at times and try to muster the energy to get back in the groove, only to face the class and reality they brought with them and retreat back into survival mode.

THEN...the school year ended! We survived! Barely but we survived! Juli has been traveling with her family. I have done the same. Slowly we are recovering. I have gained back almost all my weight in the month we have been out of school. I still fight anxiety, but not the extent I was during the school year. While I am not quite ready to start mentally planning my school year, the thought of classroom prep doesn't make my stomach hurt.

We know that the group we had was a once in a teaching career group - or at least we hope! To go into detail about the group would be fruitless as we are putting it behind us and the group itself doesn't deserve to be analyzed or discussed openly on the web. We are picking ourselves up and brushing ourselves off. We hope to blog, create, and share once again. To any followers that have stuck around and are reading this, thank you! We hope this coming year will be full of new and creative teaching ideas and products. Hope everyone is having as an enjoyable summer as we are!
As you can tell from like the past ten posts - she has been holding up the blogging fort around here. This school year has been somewhat different to say the least, but that is another post for another day. Just wanted to stop by and let everyone know that my amazing friend is celebrating her birthday today. In addition to be a great friend, she is also an awesome teacher, fun violin teacher, super mom, and recently added swimmer to her many titles. I do not know anyone who is busier than Juli, but was not at all surprised to hear she now gets up even earlier 3 days a week to go jump in a cold pool and swim for endless laps. She is crazy! Join me in wishing Juli a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Don't get me wrong. I like Saturdays too, but my family is very busy on Saturdays. It almost seems like it is another day of the work week. We have soccer games, football games, and dance rehearsals on Saturdays. But on Sunday, we have one thing to focus on. Our family! We begin with a carefree morning of quietness, coffee (husband not me), breakfast and lounging around. Then we go to church and enjoy a morning of worship together. Then we head home for relaxing, football games on TV, Sabbath rests (my personal FAVE), and playing. Today we even baked cookies together. This evening we will headed to our small group meeting with our dear friends. We have the best time. PLUS...I don't have to cook. Each week two couples share the cooking responsibility for the whole group. It is just a remarkable day. I don't want you to think that it's all play and no work. I definitely work, especially on school and TPT stuff. And I still find a few minutes to make it to the gym. But it just feels different!

So as I have been planning for the week, I thought I would pop in a show you what we're up to this week. PLACE VALUE! Aren't we always working on place value? I'm being dead serious. I literally feel like it is ALL.THE.TIME. There is always lots to cover so we try to make it as fun as possible. It is also a skill that is great practice through application in games.

So this week, we will be breaking out the Web Themed games that specifically cover 2.NBT.1 and 2.NBT.3. I hope you pop over and pick up your own copy too! I also have lots of other ones as well that cover Place Value. Let's be honest, it is one of the most important skills we teach as second grade teachers.

I am also excited to be pulling the pumpkins out and teaching through pumpkins on Thursday!!

Make sure to stop by and pick up all the Place Value packs available to you. As always, the first comment picks up a copy of your own for your classroom. (And as an added bonus, If you have a blog and post about your class using this packet, please send me the link and I will let you choose ANY product from my TPT store for free!)

Happy Halloween Week!
I feel like every time we get on to blog we are complaining about how stressed we are. It has to be said though...we are STRESSED. I hope that we aren't the only ones feeling the pressure.

Last year seemed to be quite stressful with the addition of all those extra kids. Let's just say that it is a good thing that didn't happen THIS year. I am quite certain my family would have me committed! This is the most challenging year I have had to date in 13 years of teaching. I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like it.

With that being said, I love my class. They have lots of needs and they are exhausting. But I love them. They have fun personalities, they make me laugh, and they love to be at school (even if for most of them I am asking them to do near impossible things!)

This week we had a short week. We took our kids to the zoo on Thursday and then had a half day on Friday. Tomorrow we will not be having school so that teachers can get some much needed time in their classrooms. I have scheduled parent conferences for tomorrow so I am looking forward to meeting with my parents and discussing their kids!

This past week we spent 3 and 1/2 days reviewing skip counting. Seems like a simple enough task for these kids. However, we pretty much can only do it up to 100. Past 100 is hit and miss and all the way to 1,000 is laughable. We spent lots of time evaluating and discovering number patterns this week.

So this coming week, we have decided to use my Fall Activities pack for the kids to review. It should be fun for them and the fall decor is perfect for the weather we have had here in NC. I love October so it seems perfect to embrace the fall weather while practicing our skip counting.
What a week! This is going to be one crazy year if last week has any indication!! Let's just say that both Heather and I have characterized our week as "teaching first grade." Yes, first grade. This isn't the typical first graders coming to second grade and we just don't "remember" what they're like at the beginning of the year. This is like kindergarteners coming to first grade. It is B-A-D y'all. Now, trust us when we tell you that we were warned from the first day of school LAST year by all of the first grade teachers that "they were coming". I have spent all of this week reviewing short vowel sounds. Well, back up. I have reviewed what a vowel is, and then what sound they make when they are short. YIKES! Toward the end of this week, we began analyzing our words their way lists. I have the full spectrum of ability levels. I have two who know NO sounds and will be beginning on the picture lists. Then I have two who made it all the way through the primary list and 3/4 of the way through the elementary list. So they are on the final 3 spelling skills and all in between. My grandfather grew up going to school in a one room schoolhouse. I spent three weeks with him this summer and we talked a lot about that one room school house. He truly believes it is the best way of learning. I thought a lot about those conversations this week. Even though I don't have different ages like he did in a one room schoolhouse, I do have all of the levels of one. It is exhausting. I am tired. However, more than ever before in a school year I see my PURPOSE for these children. It is clear as day. I will not let the negative get the better of me on this year. I will see the good in everything and be the best I can be for these little ones who have SO MANY NEEDS!!!!!!! So that brings to me to place value. They don't know it. So this weekend I hopped on the place value train and started making some games. I think we are going to need them and I am hoping that you will too! There are two card games with levels of all sorts. Use them all. Use what you need. Use it throughout the year as they improve. It includes a value challenge game which is played like war. It also includes a concentration game with numbers in standard form, expanded form, base ten model, and number word. I hope it helps your classes build that number sense that is so vitally important! First comment gets their own copy free!

Building place value perfection!
One thing I plan to focus on this year is moving my students to become better mental mathematicians. I really dislike the reliance on fingers and pictures that my students have. One of the strategies that we teach to help with this is Fact Families. There are lots of great resources out there to help with teaching fact families. I wanted to create a fun game that my students could play in an independent station to review the concept. I also wanted to be able to hold my students accountable with a recording sheet. This game will allow your students to play and review the concept while also having fun! I also included a variety of cards so that it can easily be adapted for a variety of ability levels. As always, the first comment gets their own copy FREE!
Happy Fact Families!
For the past two years, I have used the cardboard magazine files from IKEA. They are cheap and easy to replace. However, being cheap means that I am buying class sets twice a year. As the year began, I ran to IKEA to pick up another class set and to my surprise, they were sold out of them. I started racking my brain about what else I could do that wouldn't cost a lot of money. I went to the Dollar Tree to pick up some more book baskets for my book collection (I mean when you have 63 baskets of books holding your classroom library, you are constantly buying them!). I came across these cute blue baskets with handles.
I LOVE them! I figured $23 was a good investment and they will hopefully hold up for a few years! I wasn't exactly sure how to identify everyone's baskets since they look the same. I didn't want to write on the basket so I decided to take some Rock Star name tags, mount them to card stock, laminate them, and then write on the name tag with Sharpie. That way, I can reuse them as well. Since there are holes all over the basket and it would be hard to stick anything to it, I punched a hole in the name tag and used a book ring to attach it. So far, it is working wonderfully and I think they're super cute!!!

On a personal note, all of my children are finally in school with me. Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade. I am so happy that I get to take them to school with me each day. It brings a lot of other issues that I have to learn to manage, but having them with me is priceless. They are also in the classes of 3 of my personal friends. So it is a lot of fun. Not to mention my second grader is in Heather's class! Each night, my job is to pack lunches and backpacks. This is what my house looks like every night!

Here is what we looked like on our first day of school! We have a very early start school (7:15 for students). I leave my house at 6:30 every morning and have to have all of these precious ones ready as well. So it is EARLY in our house getting up and ready. They are pretty wide eyed for the first day and their first wake up call of 5:45!

Here we are leaving school in the afternoon (the morning pic is in the dark). Everyone jokes because we always walk with Momma and her ducklings. I don't know why, but they always walk in their birth order. (Oh, and they are all 15 months apart from each other.)

I don't know about you guys, but we have completed 2 weeks of school and I am BEAT! Exhausted does not even come close to what I am feeling. Heather and I met at school today (Saturday) because we sill had hours of work to do. We currently feel like we can't catch up. Hopefully it will get better but until then, I will continue to look bleary eyed and breaking out in hives dealing with the stress and exhaustion. My husband made a comment today about me not having put anything out on TPT for awhile. He is right, but there just isn't a spare minute in the day. Hopefully soon people!
